Monuments to visit PAYS BASQUE NAVARRE - RIOJA

This building was built in 1920, in the medieval style in keeping with the architectural group of the site. You will find it in the old town, in Zubi-Zaharra old bridge.

Stone Tower built around 1500 then rebuilt in various opportunities. His first youth, it retains the two starters with pointed arches and the windows on the upper floors. But the interest lies in the fact that the mother of saint Ignace de Loyola was born there.

This tower had to be in its time a very luxurious aristocratic house, because it has the air of a true urban 17th century palace. Its recent is discovered by chance, as it appeared, to the great surprise of people of the city, under the facade of a building that wanted to rehabilitate.

Dating from the 17th century, it is a martyr of Renaissance style, one side, represents a Christ crucified and, on the other, a Virgin and Child.

Charming church of the sixteenth century, where most enthusiastic come to revere a relic of the holy apostle Peter. It is topped by a neo-gothic tower which already existed in the 11th century.

A plaque at number 16 of this street tells us the house where Unamuno, the illustrious universal thinker, poet, novelist and teacher, was born on September 29, 1864. A few metres is the place dedicated to it.

Created in 1890, the Bilbao Stock Exchange was originally held in the Arriaga Theatre Hall. Since 1905, she has occupied this elegant building, whose facade is decorated with sculptures.

The Palace of the Government of Vizcaya, built between 1890 and 1900, is one of the most remarkable examples of Basque eclecticism, which freely combines elements of classical architecture to better blur references. The interior of the building, richly decorated with marble, mirrors and works of art, also preserves beautiful frescoes in the Salón del Trono. After the construction of this palace, which marks the apogee of the eclectic style in the Basque country, it is the modernist current that will dominate the architecture of the city from 1900.

This romantic castle has a little resemblance to the bavarian castles. An enchanting place, with all its maze-like towers and its levels that bring back for us during knights. Also a park of great ecological wealth, with no fewer than 70 species of exotic and endemic trees. The head office at the origin of the chalk-lining of Butrón and the castle was built in the 13th century. In the 19th century, the castle was restored, skilfully and in the greatest respect for its medieval origins, by the architect Francisco de Cubas.

The town hall and town centre of Munguia were built in the th century. See in particular: the place des Charters, which celebrates the rights of the Basques and the Place Matxín in memory of the famous pirate of the same name.

The old roman road bear witness to the presence of the Romans in Encartaciones. Its layout dates from the 1st century and allowed the transportation of goods from Herrera de Pisuerga (Palencia) to Castro Urdiales (Cantabria).

The Quadra, high, 20 m seems timeless way over the centuries. Built during the second half of xiv^e century, this tower of defence is remarkably well preserved. 

Probably dating from the foundation of the city, this bridge three arches connects banks of the river Cadagua. On one of them stands a tower which was to be at the time a watchtower. 

The lighthouse Gorliz stands on the cape Billano, opposite the island of the same name. Built in 1990, it offers a beautiful view of the coast. 

Built at the beginning of the 1920 th century, this huge building overlooking the beach has the old charm of the buildings of the seaside resorts of the s. Now transformed into a hospital, it keeps a nostalgic air.

The only gate that remains of the wall that encircled Durango. It dates from xvi^e century.
