Vailly-sur-Sauldre is located about forty kilometers east of Nançay and about twenty kilometers east of Aubigny-sur-Nère. Very pleasantly situated on the river where it takes its name, the municipality is the capital of the Country Fort. You can admire the church of Saint Martin on the front of which you can still read the motto Freedom, Equality, Painted Brotherhood in 1880. Vailly-sur-Sauldre Castle features vestiges of the xiith century fortress and sixteenth centuries. This fortress established in the valley, and whose Sauldre filled the ditches, found in this situation a great strength. The two previous towers and adjacent curtines remain. This strong castle belonged in 1423 to Béraud III, Count of Sancerre and was resumes to King Charles VII. In the sixteenth century, he became the residence of François de Bueil, Archbishop of Bourges, who burned his arms and was sold in 1777 at the Count of Espagnac.
