In the 12th century, near the church, a fortress was built on the site of the future residence of the Dukes of Bourbon. In 1232, Archambaud VIII granted the town a franchise charter, confirming the privileges granted by Archambaud VII. Moulins becomes the capital of the duchy under the principality of Louis II. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the medieval buildings are transformed into private mansions. In the 18th century, ditches are filled in, the enclosure is destroyed and replaced by courtyards and boulevards, and a bridge is built. In the 20th century, the arts of the Belle Epoque are illustrated in the decorations, cafés, and shop fronts.
