Sury-en-Vaux is located 6 kilometers north of Sancerre. Its territory was occupied by man from prehistory, then during the Gallo-Roman period. The ancient "Brunehaut Road" linking Saint-Satur to Orléans passed through Sury-en-Vaux.Later the seigneury of Sury, property of the chapter of Saint-Étienne de Bourges, will expand in 1236 the possessions and rights of the Knight Pierre de Livron. Sury-en-Vaux becomes an important area. The perception of her tithes also involved the parishes of Sainte-Gemme, Bué and Chavignol (as well as Verdigny from the sixteenth century). In addition to many lands and vineyards, barn at the tidal houses, house house, several presses and various built properties belonged to the canoines of the cathedral. Sury-en-Vaux's fief, attached to the church of Bourges, has always remained outside the property of Sancerre County. The religious wars and the siege of Sancerre in the sixteenth century spared Sury-en-Vaux. Craftsmen, traders, winemakers, laborers and notables participate in the relative prosperity of this fief. In the eighteenth century a few large landowners, characters of public life, have built beautiful houses of convenience in the territory of the commune.
