This town on the banks of the Cher is known for its modern industrial activity. Saint-Florent undoubtedly owes its origins to the presence of a ford, the starting point of a network of roads used by the Romans. The village has always been an attractive place to live, since the river was navigable in addition to being easy to cross. Since the Middle Ages, the village has been home to an important guild of bargemen and driftwood drivers. As a stopover for "inland sailors", Saint-Florent naturally had two ports: one upstream, at La Noue near the present-day viaduct, and the other downstream near the fairgrounds.
