It was in Concarneau that Georges Simenon, father of Commissaire Maigret, found inspiration in the early 1930s, as evidenced by two of his novels. The third-largest town in Finistère after Brest and Quimper, Concarneau is France's ninth-largest fishing port. The astonishing Ville Close (walled town) is home to numerous shops in its narrow streets. It has become one of Brittany's most popular tourist destinations. With its beaches, coastal paths, architectural and cultural heritage and harbors in the heart of the town, Concarneau is lively all year round. On Mondays and Fridays, a beautiful market is held next to the covered market.
