The first mention of the village is made under the Roman term "Petrosa" (the rocky road). From the 17th century to 1919, the German term "Pfetterhausen" was used before reading "Perugia" and finally "Pfetterhouse". The inhabitants of Pfetterhouse are commonly known as Pfetterhousians and the Alsatian dialect is at the origin of the expression Schneegans, which means, in French, "snow goose". The family of little Alsatian Joseph Meister, the first to be vaccinated against rabies by Louis Pasteur, had operated the village mill for nearly two centuries.
