Just 5 km from thesmall town of Appenzell, the village of Gonten lies off the beaten tourist track. It is the starting point for a number of interesting hikes in the beautiful surrounding countryside. The barefoot trail through the Gonten high moor from Gontenbad to the lower station of the Kronbergbahn offers a unique experience. On Sundays, Appenzell folk groups perform standards of Appenzell music in the village center. Rhythmic and melodic, sometimes cheerful, sometimes melancholy, it's a blend of traditional Alpine music and gypsy songs.
