Wynyard is located 17 kilometers west of Burnie. The small town of 6,500 is a regional hub serving the surrounding rural areas. It was probably named after Major General Edward Buckley Wynyard (1788-1864). The Wynyard area is famous for the annual spring tulip bloom and accompanying tulip festival. Large fields can be seen north of the town, towards Table Cape, where there is a heritage-listed lighthouse that remains in operation today. Also worth seeing is Freestone Cove, a small sheltered bay on the northern outskirts of Wynyard.
