Unlike the popular ideas of tourists, Sydney was not built around Botany Bay, but it was about kilometres north of Port Jackson. When Captain Cook landed in the winter of 1770, he established his encampment at Botany Bay. The place is now marked by various memorials. Then when Captain Arthur Philip laid his foot on this land in 1788, in the summer he realized that natural resources were limited. He sent a ship looking for a better settlement that will be Port Jackson, the current Sydney Bay.
