While the Blue Mountains had already been crossed at Katoomba a decade earlier, the first journey along what is now the Bells Line of Road was undertaken by Archibald Bell in 1823. In his diary, Bell described the richness of the soil in the Bilpin area, which inevitably led to the arrival of settlers eager to grow fruit trees in the area. A second wave of settlers moved here during the gold rush of 1851 when the Bells Line of Raod became a route to the Bathurst gold region. Today, Bilpin is home to many apple orchards and businesses.
