Jenolan Caves is, along with the Three Sisters (in Katoomba), the most important tourist center in the Blue Mountains. The name of the place comes from the aboriginal word Jenolan, which means "high mountain", and was adopted in 1884, after a first name which was Fish River Caves. There is something to suit every budget at this site, which attracts 250,000 visitors each year. The Jenolan Caves House, built in 1897 by architect Walter Liberty Vernon, is the main venue for the complex. Ten caves, at least 20,000 years old, were discovered progressively between 1860 and 1904... and many are still to be discovered!
