The people of Kičevo are eagerly awaiting completion of the Skopje-Tetovo freeway, which will be extended to Ohrid via their town. In the meantime, you may prefer to take the superb R 1202 road through the Mavrovo National Park. But don't write Kičevo off just yet. The town is well placed between Mavrovo, the Great Lakes and Pelagonia. It has an interesting fortress and monastery to visit. It's true that the architecture here, inherited from the socialist period, is rather drab. But, as is often the case in this country, the beautiful surrounding countryside makes up for any urban shortcomings.
