The 400-odd houses of Lazaropole are surrounded by greenery on the foothills of Mount Bistra. Some are falling into ruin. Others are gleaming and serve as second homes for former residents who return for vacations or weekends. This former Mijak village lost almost 1,000 inhabitants in the 1960s. By the early 2000s, there were none left. But the splendid setting, trails and local traditions have continued to attract tourists, so much so that several accommodations and a mini-market have opened, and Lazaropole is enjoying a timid renaissance. On site, we recommend a visit to St. George's Church (1838) and the 15 km signposted trail leading to Tresonče via the Kalina Dupka cave (Калина Дупка). This one goes 300 m underground. A fairly narrow chamber is accessible with good shoes and a flashlight.
