Accessible by road through semi-desert landscapes more reminiscent of Scotland than the Mediterranean, Galičnik is Reka's most emblematic hamlet. The Mijaks gather here for the Galička Svadba on July 11-12. Around 5,000 people attend the wedding of a couple chosen by the community. The ceremony follows a precise ritual, with a mock abduction, horse-drawn procession, dancing and traditional music in the midst of the heat. The Hotel Neda and the few B&Bs and restaurants in Galičnik are packed at this time, as this beautiful hamlet is a Mecca of Mijak culture. Many important figures were born here, such as the revolutionary Georgi Pulevski (1817-1893), who was one of the first to develop the idea of a country separate from Bulgaria; the great singer Aleksandar Sarievski (1922-2002), famous throughout the former Yugoslavia; and the architect Slavko Brezoski (1922-2017), who designed Skopje's astonishing Orthodox cathedral.
