While the town of Makedonski Brod is not particularly interesting, the surrounding area offers a wide variety of landscapes. For the municipality is immense. Between Prilep and the rural outskirts of Skopje, it stretches over 100 km from south to north. Here you'll find the magnificent Zrze monastery, decorated with frescoes by the painter Onufri, a host of caves, one of which is protected by Unesco, hamlets tucked away between mountains and the country's largest artificial lake, Kozjak. Tourism is still underdeveloped in this region called the Poreče. Very few hotels. Some facilities are still lacking, such as secure access to the country's two most famous caves. For a more "in-depth" visit to the bowels of the Poreče, we recommend going through the National Caving Federation (sfm.speleo.mk). Tours for beginners can be booked in advance.
