Gostivar's main asset: its location between the Šar Mountains and Mavrovo National Parks. And... that's about it. No museum and very few monuments to see. The first town, crossed by the Vardar river (not very big in this case), is just a stopover where you can find mountain bikes, ski or hiking equipment before setting off across the large protected areas nearby. The city is in crisis. Waves of privatization in the 1990s led to the closure of most factories, and over 20% of the population has since moved elsewhere. Gostivar also regularly experiences outbreaks of violence between communities: in 1997, in 2001 during the civil war, and again in 2012, when two Albanian residents were killed by a Macedonian policeman.
