On the road to the Mavrovo and Šar Mountains national parks, the "capital" of the Albanian community in Northern Macedonia is worth a stop for its two fine Islamic monuments: the Colorful Mosque and the Arabati-Baba tekké. For the rest, the sullen architecture of the socialist era doesn't invite you to stay here for very long. Some of the gray buildings still bear the scars of the civil war of 2001. Tetovo was the main battleground for the Albanian independence movement UÇK-M and government forces. Strongly attached to its autonomy, the town had revolted several times against the Ottomans and the Yugoslav authorities. In the 1960s, Tito "invited" the majority of Tetovo's Turkish inhabitants (2.8% today) to emigrate to Turkey.
