There are two very good reasons to stop in Janče: for its hotel-restaurant Tutto, one of our favorite addresses in the Balkans, and for the trail from here to Galičnik. It climbs 6 km with a 690 m ascent. The hike is easy and offers magnificent scenery. It's a great idea for a two-day itinerary, with an overnight stay at Galičnik's Hotel-Restaurant Neda. Alternatively, by road, drive 31 km through Lazaropole. Now mostly populated by Torbeš (Muslim Macedonians), Mijaks (Orthodox Macedonians) and Turks, the village of Janče is of little interest in itself: mostly derelict stone houses, a small modern mosque (above) and a 19th-century church (below), three of whose old icons were stolen in 2014 (visit on request at Hotel Tutto).
