Skelani/Скелани has a population of around 850, mostly Bosnian, and belongs to the municipality of Srebrenica. The village lies opposite Bajina Bašta (Serbia), 40 km southeast of Srebrenica and 200 km northeast of Višegrad (or 65 km via Serbia). It is linked to Srebrenica by Laki Nin minibuses once a day; there are numerous connections to Serbia from Bajina Bašta.Situated on the banks of the Drina, Skelani is still relatively undeveloped, but is now the main gateway to the Drina National Park, created in 2017. Still haunted by the horrors of the last war, it boasts magnificent scenery with Lake Perućac and the deep Drina Canyon. The village is also a crossing point to Serbia with the Skelani-Bajina Bašta border post. As Skelani is landlocked and difficult to access from Srebrenica (bad mountain road), the population is more inclined towards Serbia, where the beautiful villages of Mokra Gora and Zlatibor have benefited since 1981 from the aura of the Tara National Park (see Petit Futé Serbia). The easiest way to find accommodation here is to cross the ugly iron bridge to Bajina Bašta (population 2,800), where the supply is abundant. Skelani is one of the oldest sites in the region, with the remains of the Roman city of Malvesiatium. But the village was hit hard by the 1992-1995 war, with the killing of civilians and the presence of the Yugoslav army and fierce Russian paramilitaries.
