Srebrenica/Сребреница (pronounced "srebrenitsa") has a population of about 2,500, of which 51% are Bosniaks and 49% are Bosnian Serbs. It is the capital of the municipality of Srebrenica (population 13,000), in the Bosnian Serb Republic. The city is located 14 km south of Serbia (Bratunac-Ljubovija border crossing), 105 km southeast of Tuzla and 133 km northeast of Sarajevo. Bus connections to Tuzla (4/day), Sarajevo and Bijeljina (3/day), Belgrade (2/day), Banja Luka and Brčko (1/day).Like Auschwitz and Hiroshima, history has turned Srebrenica into a place of suffering and memory. Most tourists who come here do so on a day trip from Sarajevo to visit the Genocide Memorial. This unique and very moving place was created to honor the victims of the largest massacre in Europe since the end of World War II: more than 8,300 Bosnians killed by the Bosnian Serb army in July 1995. The city, once prosperous thanks to silver mines and thermal baths, still bears the scars of the disaster: ruined buildings and nationalist graffiti that testify to the strong tensions between communities. But Srebrenica is beginning to be reborn with the creation of a new spa complex and the "Srebrenica City of Hope" project. The latter brings a little hope to the city. It also allows to stay for a cheap price while discovering the nature, the traditions and the inhabitants of a region as complicated as it is endearing.
