Like many small towns in southwestern Antioquia, Salgar was founded during the paisa agricultural colonization in 1880. The history of the pueblo and of Cacique Barroso (which is celebrated in October), is told in detail in the Casa de la Cultura Luis Fernando Vélez Vélez, a magnificent house with characteristic architecture of the region. Salgar lives mainly from the cultivation of coffee, but it also produces plantains, manioc, sugar cane and citrus fruits. Tourism is still in its infancy and the traveler will feel at ease in the main square, in the shade of gigantic samans, before exploring the surrounding area. Lands generous in clear rivers and natural swimming pools where to refresh. There are also beautiful walks to do, especially in Cuenca del Sucre, or to climb Cerro Plateado, which offers a nice view of Salgar and Urrao. The locals like to go with their families to the Charcos de Mulato, or to the banks of the Barroso River, for the typical Sunday " paseo de ollas ", where they cook in large pots by the river
