The capital of Chocó lies on the banks of the Atrató River, in the heart of one of the most inhospitable forests in Colombia. It is an important river port, inhabited by descendants of black slaves and indigenous Emberas. There is not much to do there and the architecture is decaying. Once there, the river is often the only way to get around. The handicrafts of the indigenous people in Quibdó are remarkable: goldsmithing, but also baskets, hats and carpets, as well as boats made of palms ( damagua or cabecinergo). The folklore of the Pacific regions, a curious mixture of Spanish romancero and African rhythms, is particularly rich. Quibdó is often only a stopover before flying to the Pacific, to Nuquí or Bahía Solano. But a stay in Quibdó is a great opportunity to discover in depth the essence of Chocó.
