Manizales is known for its hospitality. The "city of open doors" was founded by immigrants from the Antioquia region. The capital of Caldas is perched at 2,216 meters above sea level, on thousands of bamboo stilts clinging to the steep wall of the Andes Mountains. It is a young and university town. The coffee trade is important, while tourism is developing: people come to visit the magnificent coffee fincas, to observe the birds, or to practice Andeanism in the Parque Nacional Los Nevados. The Manizales fair, at the beginning of January, attracts mostly Colombian tourists for its breathtaking parades and the election of Miss Coffee! The bullfighting season and the international theater festival (beginning of September) also gather many visitors.
