In the north of the department of Caldas, halfway between Medellín and Manizales (about a 4-hour drive, $35,000 by bus), Aguadas is ranked among the most beautiful villages in Colombia, with its colorful alleys with traditional Bahareque houses and its Parque Bolivar, where there is a baroque fountain, brought from New York at the beginning of the 20th century, and a replica of the statue of the Libertador by Italian artist Pietro Tenerani. The village is famous for its handcrafted production of sombreros aguadeños, hats made of "toquilla" or "iraca" palm fiber(Carludovica palmata), the same one used for the famous Panama hat.
