Kavaja/Kavajë (pronounced "cavailla" or "cavailleu") has a population of around 20,000. It is the capital of the municipality of Kavaja (population 40,000). The town lies 21 km southwest of Durrës and 32 km north of Divjaka. Minibus connections from Tirana, Durrës, Vlora, Elbasan and Berat. This old town, known to the Romans as Cavalli ("horses" in Latin), has a pleasant little town center. A palm-lined promenade leads to Demokracia square, dominated by a Moorish-style clock tower (1817), the arches of the old Kubelie mosque (1735) and the white minaret of the new mosque (1994).
