Highway 97, also known as the Cariboo highway, runs through the Fraser Valley and then across the Cariboo Mountains from Cache Creek to Prince George via the historic Gold Rush Trail from Lillooet to Baskerville. The landscape changes from agricultural valleys to thick coniferous forests over 400 km. Far from the crowds, close to wildlife, this is British Columbia's backcountry. Cache Creek owes its name to the fur traders, who used the area to hide supplies. Its Gold Rush era spirit is reborn through its historic Hat Creek Ranch site. Primarily historic, the town served as a supply hub for miners on their journey north.
