Located 36 km southeast of Hanoi, in the Yên My district, Liêu Xa is a craft village specializing in the manufacture of cardboard masks and "ông hao " drums, which are a children's delight during Trung thu (or Moon Festival), which takes place in mid-autumn. The drums are shaped like small barrels, painted red. At the ends of the barrel are two buffalo skin membranes. The masks are made of papier-mâché and covered with a paste made from cassava powder. Animals are molded on children's faces. The final stage, painting the mask, is a very popular activity with the children.
