Phat Diem Cathedral is the largest Catholic architectural complex in Vietnam. It was built between 1875 and 1899 by Father Tran Luoc, better known as Father Six, who drew on the architectural repertoire of pagodas and dinhs, the traditional communal houses. The cathedral, built on marshy ground, rests on a forest of bamboo poles. Phat Diem, in Kim Son district, is located 120 km south of Hanoi and 30 km south of Ninh Binh. From Hanoi, access by National Road 1 via Ninh Binh. From Ninh Binh and Tam Côc, buses run from Ninh Binh bus station to Phat Diem.
