First mentioned in 1313, Achenkirch established its reputation as a tourist destination in the early 20th century, thanks to visits from writers such as Ludwig Steub, Peter Rosegger and Ludwig Ganghofer. Between the Karwendel and Rofan mountain ranges, on the shores of the magnificent Achensee lake, the largest in the Tyrol with its crystal-clear waters, it is one of Austria's most popular holiday resorts. In summer and winter alike, tourism is well developed thanks to the proximity of the mountains and the magnificent lake. The nearby Hochalm-Christlum ski area boasts 27 km of slopes, and there are almost 450 km of hiking trails in the vicinity.
