The Estero De and Sol island of Tasajera are part of the Lempa-Jaltepeque complex, declared RAMSAR and biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Sol de Tasareja is a thin strip of land with 14 km of coastline. This island began to be inhabited in the last century when some of its lands were used for cotton cultivation. During the civil war, Salvadorans found refuge and thus brought together the communities of San Rafael Tasajera and La Colorada, with today 1 400 and 350 inhabitants respectively. Its inhabitants live mainly in fishing and selling… turtle eggs. A protection project was initiated in 2014, supported by international cooperation and the Ministry of the Environment of El Salvador. The funds released allow the inhabitants to sell the eggs they collect to the project rather than to coyotes (people living in the illegal resale of these eggs at restaurants).
