Located at approximately 70 km of La Paz, the Tiwanaku culture developed during nearly 3 000 years since the region of the lake Titicaca, its natural cradle, before extending its influence to the Inca Empire during its imperial phase. "Space, time and cultures", it is by these terms that the Bolivian archaeologist Carlos Ponce Sanginés characterizes this civilization, creator of one of the most monumental architectures of the Andean area. This civilization, which spread on the Andes its know-how in the fields of agriculture, mathematics, astronomy and engineering, disappeared mysteriously during the XIth century. The site of Tiwanaku is vast and there is much to see, including the monumental ruins, temples, palaces and its museums. Some of the most important structures include the Sun Gate, the Kalasasaya Temple and the semi-subterranean temple adorned with a hundred carved faces. To better understand the history and culture of the site, it is recommended to hire a local guide. Visit the site early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat.
