An unincorporated municipality of some 1,000 souls, it owes its name to the famous privateer Jean Lafitte, as does the community next door (Jean Lafitte). Located at the end of Route 45 along the Barataria Preserve, it is an important fishing haven for the local economy and is part of the great traditions of the local population. It is not surprising to learn that many people come here to catch fish, with a few charter companies operating in the area offering speckled trout fishing, among others. Finally, people also come to Lafitte for its famous swamp tours.
