Heir to a long metallurgical tradition, Guérigny saw its heyday in the 18th century with the Forges de la Chaussade, one of France's first ironworks. Specializing in the manufacture of parts for the French Navy, the company continued to operate in Guérigny until 1971 as Forges Nationales de la Marine. Today, the buildings of the Forges Royales industrial site are the site of numerous cultural activities, including the Forges et Marines museum, which presents the history of Nivernais metallurgy. It's a plunge into local history in the heart of the Bertranges forest.
