The village of Manavi is known for its production of wines of the mtsvane grape variety which produces very good dry whites. The locality is dominated by a superb Byzantine style chapel made of bricks and stones, itself built at the foot of the ruins of the Manavi fortress. Manavi comes to life on St. George's Day, when a colourful procession climbs up to the chapel. Shortly after Manavi in the direction of Gourdjaani and Telavi, another medieval fortress, more real than life, can be seen; this one was built in the 1970s for the needs of Georgian cinema! It was partly here that the film The Legend of the Surey Fortress by Sergei Paradjanov was shot.
