The village of Akhtala is still little known to tourists. However, all they have to do is follow the river Débet for 15 km north from Haghpat to discover its superb fortified monastery, which conceals the most beautiful frescoes in the country. The place, also called Printzahank (copper mine), because of deposits exploited since the highest antiquity and some of which are still in activity - alas too close to the monastery! - has been the subject of excavations, archaeological ones those, by the Frenchman Jacques de Morgan (1857-1924), who brought part of his discoveries back to France, where they are exhibited in the archaeology museum of the castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
