Lithgow is located in the valley of the same name, about 40 km west of Katoomba, at the extreme western edge of the Blue Mountains. It is named after William Lithgow (1784/1864), who was the first Auditor General of the Sydney Colony. Apart from the museum of its former arms factory, there is nothing special to note in Lithgow except that it is easy to find accommodation, food and supplies. Lithgow is a crossroads town with access to Bathurst or Mudgee inland, or back to Sydney on Highway 40 (Bells Line of Road) which separates the Blue Mountains National Park from Wollemi National Park.
