With a population of around 10,000, it's not lacking in charm, despite the scars of its port facilities. Many of the buildings in its downtown area are listed by the National Trust, and the Portland Cable Tram allows you to visit the main points of interest: the Portland Powerhouse Car Museum, the Maritime Discovery Centre, the Whalers Bluff Lighthouse and the World War II Memorial Lookout Tower. Portland claims to be the starting point for the Great South West Walk, which forms a 250-kilometer loop towards Nelson (all the necessary information is available on the following website: www.greatsouthwestwalk.com).
