At the gateway to the Ardennes, the Aywaille region is often referred to as the garden of the city of Liège. Leaving the Cité ardente, you enter a verdant, serene rural region at the confluence of the Ourthe and Amblève rivers. Over the centuries, these two rivers have carved out valleys and shaped breathtaking panoramas, such as Belgium's only torrent (the Ninglinspo), just a stone's throw from the astonishing quartzite boulders on the Amblève and the Fonds de Quarreux (both listed as Wallonia's outstanding heritage sites). Add to this the Remouchamps and Comblain-au-Pont caves, the Lembrée valley and, of course, the enchanting Ourthe and Amblève rivers, the Monde Sauvage d'Aywaille... The diversity of the Pays d'Ourthe-Amblève is also evident in its traditional buildings, which are often very well preserved. You'll be just as charmed by the magnificent flower-filled village of Deigné as you will be by the world of Condroz grey stone near Anthisnes and Tavier, or by the sandstone of the Aywaille region, the commercial heart of the area. The town boasts numerous family-run cafés and restaurants where the Dutch, among others, like to come for a drink on sunny days. Mostly rural, the region is a nature getaway that can be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback: there are almost 900 km of signposted footpaths, 700 km of cycle paths and 150 km of bridleways.
