Thuin is a small town of 15,000 inhabitants, which in the industrial era boasted five shipyards on the banks of the Sambre, while the lower town lived to the rhythm of the barge industry. In fact, many of the town's barge owners came from there and chose to retire here. In fact, the Rivage district, between the right bank of the Sambre and the viaduct, is dedicated to this industry, and is inhabited by bargemen who had set foot on land. Proclaimed a free Commune, it elects its own mayor and holds its own ducasse in July.
