A monk, named Ghislain and probably originating from Germany, founded a monastery around the year 650. These were the beginnings of the small town which today has a little over 20,000 inhabitants. A prosperous town during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Saint-Ghislain was above all a crossroads where belligerents from all over Europe met. History repeated itself in contemporary times as the town was bombed during the Second World War. A mistake, the Allied bombings targeted the marshalling yard! As for the "passenger" station, recently restored, it is one of the most beautiful classical style stations in Wallonia
