After many difficulties, Charles V arrived in Reinosa on October 15, 1517, with his sister Eleonore. He spent about ten days in this small town, which he visited again in 1522 on his second trip to Spain. Situated at the gates of Castile, Reinosa developed in the Middle Ages thanks to its strategic position between the ports of Cantabria and the lands of Castile, becoming an obligatory place of passage for travellers and merchants. Its historic centre preserves some buildings of medieval origin, the Baroque church of San Sebastián and a beautiful group of buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
