Thousand Isles, a municipality officially established in 1855, is part of the Regional County Municipality (RCM) of Argenteuil and has approximately 1 500 inhabitants over an area of 60 km 2. The presence of many rivers and several islands justifies first the name of the river, then the name of the noble entity, the word island being spelled ex isle, the circumflex accent serving as a substitute for the "s" disappeared in modern French.
