The atoll of Maalhosmadulu South is, together with the atoll of Goidhoo, the administrative atoll of Baa, of which Eydhafushi is the capital. The atoll extends 42 km from north to south, 32 km from east to west and includes 13 inhabited islands out of 75. In total, about 12,600 Maldivians live there. For a long time, there was only one tourist island on the atoll, but since the end of 1998, 12 new ones have opened. The atoll is home to hotels that are a pure pleasure of eco-luxury luxury, such as Coco Palm Dhoni Kolhu, Soneva Fushi and Anantara Kihavah Villas. These resorts combine luxury and tradition perfectly, on very authentic virgin islands. While the main activity of the atoll remains tuna fishing, access to tourism on these new islands has created higher-paying jobs that attract Maldivians. However, the atoll is still not very popular compared to the atolls of Malé and Ari. As a result, wildlife is very well preserved and diving sites are still very accessible. The atoll has a remarkable biodiversity, with magnificent coral reefs. Between May and July, many whale sharks and manta rays visit it. Giant turtles and eagle rays will also be on display more than anywhere else. Since 2011, Baa Atoll has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
