Orange lies 260 km west of Sydney and around 60 km from Bathurst. It is the birthplace of poets Banjo Paterson (1864-1941) and Kenneth Slessor (1901-1971). With a population of just over 40,000, its economy is based on agriculture, gold mining and services. Two major university campuses are located here, and the student population makes the town quite lively. There are numerous shops, hotels and restaurants. There are several vineyards to visit in the vicinity. Mount Canobolas (1,395 m), a few kilometers to the south-west, offers magnificent views over the entire region.
