The Central West region extends from the Blue Mountains 400 km inland to the more arid interior. Bathurst, the gateway to the region, is a city of 29,000 people located about 200 km west of Sydney. Proclaimed a town in 1815, Bathurst did not become prosperous until 1851, when the first profitable gold deposit was discovered in the area. It became a city in 1885. Today, Bathurst is known for its motor racing circuit, the Mount Panorama Circuit, one of the most beautiful and challenging in the world. A round of the Australian Championship is held here annually in October and the Bathurst 12 Hours in February.
