It was in 1872 that the world's largest gold nugget (the Holtermann nugget) was discovered in the Hill End goldfields. The goldfields were soon overrun, and at the height of the gold rush, the town boasted 8,000 inhabitants, 28 pubs, an oyster bar and a mile of colorful, bustling storefronts. Only a hundred or so remain today, but some of the original stores are still standing. Stop off at the Great Western Store to view old photographs before enjoying a coffee at the Royal Hotel, visit the Hill End Heritage Centre and History Hill Museum and explore the Bald Hill Tourist Mine.
