Approximately 270 km northwest of Sydney and 120 km north of Bathurst, Mudgee is close to Goulburn River National Park. The Mudgee area was explored in 1821 by William Lawson, then settled in 1822 by George and Henry Cox. This small wine-growing town, with its many old houses and Colonial Inn Museum (open daily 10am-2pm-3pm), was virtually forgotten until the 1990s. Since then, the town's vineyards have experienced an extraordinary boom. Some twenty wine cellars are open to the public for tasting. In September, don't miss the grape harvest festival.
