Nestled along the Turon River 40 km north of Bathurst, Sofala is a small historic village steeped in history. Considered Australia's oldest gold rush town, following the discovery of gold here in 1851, it is now home to fewer than 200 people when over 10,000 thronged the area at the height of the gold rush. Two main streets, a pub and a few relics at the entrance to the town await the passing traveller. The Footbridge at Joyce Peace Memorial Park is a reconstruction of the original 1870 footbridge. A small private museum of local interest can be found on the eastern edge of town.
