A tiny village 7 km south-east of Milan, Chiaravalle's splendid abbey has shone for almost nine centuries. The few houses clustered around the abbey are of little interest, but a trip to Chiaravalle is mystical. It's hard to believe you're only 15 kilometers from the Fashion Quadrilateral. Here, the chanting of Cistercian monks resonates far from the drumbeat of runway music. If it weren't for the wisps of smoke from nearby industry, you'd almost think you could still see the monks wandering their grounds. Take the time to stop off and have a coffee in the village bar.
